Winter in Detroit, MI is a great time of year to take advantage of the snowy outdoors and enjoy some of the best activities the season has to offer. With the right winter gear, you can explore some of the most exciting winter activities within driving distance of Detroit.

Cross-Country Skiing at Maybury State Park

Maybury State Park is a large park with more than 15 miles of trails for cross-country skiers. This beautiful state park is located at 49601 Eight Mile Rd, Northville. The trails are groomed and ready to go, with a six-kilometer trail that’s recommended for beginners.

If you’re looking to explore more of the park, there are a couple of trails that are up to nine kilometers long. Cross-country skiing is a great winter activity for people of all ages and abilities. A full day of cross-country skiing at Maybury State Park costs $15 per person.

Snowshoeing at Kensington Metropark

If you’re looking for a classic winter adventure, you can’t go wrong with snowshoeing. Located at 4570 Huron River Pkwy, Milford, Kensington Metropark has miles of trails with varying degrees of difficulty, so you can find one that suits your skills. There are also warming houses along the trails for breaks and snacks during your hike.

If you’ve never been snowshoed before, there are guided tours available through the park on weekends. In fact, if you prefer not to use snowshoes during the winter months, Kensington also rents out skis, sleds, and snowboards for use on their trails.

Ice Skating at The Rink at Campus Martius Park

If you’re looking for a way to shake off cabin fever and forget that winter exists, you can’t go wrong with ice skating. The Rink at Campus Martius Park is open year-round and a great go-to spot if you’re in the Detroit area. This outdoor rink is located at 800 Woodward Ave, Detroit.

The rink offers skate rentals, lockers, and storage for your belongings, as well as an excellent food court with some of Detroit’s best restaurants. The rink also has plenty of other activities going on during the winter months, including holiday light displays, outdoor yoga classes, and live music performances.
