2022 Ford Explorer
The Ford Explorer has long stood at the pinnacle of premium SUV design. Those looking to elevate their drive with high levels of capability, personality, and space would do well behind the steering wheel of a 2022 Explorer. Here's everything you need to know about this model year's new and improved Explorer.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
Shopping for your 2022 Ford Explorer means finding the trim level that most suits your needs. Explore the self-titled entry-level Explorer, and move up through the XLT, ST-Line, Timberline, Limited, ST, King Ranch, and Platinum to find your perfect model. We suggest opting for a model equipped with the available twin-panel moonroof for an enhanced view of the world around your Explorer. Choose the Timberline to get unique exterior accents such as a red recovery hook and black-painted wheels. Each model boasts LED headlights and a power liftgate. The XLT adds roof rails.
Engine (Power)
The 2022 Explorer's primary engine is a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that pushes forward with 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. The ST trim level introduces a 3.0-liter turbocharged V-6 engine that creates 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. A 3.3-liter hybrid V-6 engine is also available, producing a combined 318 horsepower with its additional electric motor. These engines are mated to 10-speed automatic transmissions. The 2022 Explorer gets up to 20 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway or up to 27 combined mpg with the hybrid option.
Performance
Those who find their vehicle often covered in mud should consider the adventure-ready Timberline model, which adds off-road features such as skid plates and a limited-slip rear differential. The Timberline comes standard with the Explorer's available four-wheel-drive system. This upgraded drivetrain adds seven Terrain Management System drive modes that allow you to communicate with your SUV about the road ahead. These drive modes include Snow/Sand, Eco, Sport, and Trail. With the Class IV Trailer Tow Package, the Explorer can tow up to 5,600 pounds.
Interior
The Explorer's cabin can fit up to seven passengers thanks to its three-row cabin setup. Opt for the power-fold third row to make reconfiguring your cabin as easy as the push of a button. The E-Z Entry second-row seats make getting into the Explorer's rear row easier. With all the Explorer's rear seats folded down, you can create a flat area that offers up to 87 cubic feet of cargo space.
Upgrade to the available 10.1-inch portrait LED touch screen with an integrated navigation system for an even smarter Explorer. You can connect your phone to the Explorer's screen via Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. A 12.3-inch customizable digital driver cluster is also available.
Safety Features
The 2022 Ford Explorer boosts your confidence on the road with Ford Co-Pilot360 technologies. These include features such as a lane-keeping system, pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, Ford's Blind Spot Information System, and reverse brake assist. All models are outfitted with a blind-spot monitor that makes changing lanes and merging onto highways less stressful.
